I’ve been playing most Fridays at a new restaurant in Santa Monica, Angel’s Piano Bar and Supper Club. The place is owned by the guy who used to own the very well-run Temple Bar. The place is only a few months old, yet it has the feel of a place that’s been around for a long time, not as in “an old run down dump” but as in “a classic timeless late night hang.” They are one of the few remaing clubs in LA to sport a well-tuned and well maintained grand piano. Best of all, there is no cover!
I’ll be there on Friday from 9-midnight with the regular band, bandleader and bassist Nick Rosen, and excellent guitarist, singer, and all around nice guy Marcel Camargo.
On Sunday, I’ll be at another cool gem of a place, Room 5 in West Hollywood on La Brea, an upper room above the Italian restaurant Amalfi. They are looking to do more jazz there on Sundays and here’s hoping that they can get something going there as well, cause we all agree that there is a need more jazz listening rooms in Los Angeles.
This Sunday at 9pm (One set only!) I’ll be playing at Room 5 with the new power tandem of Jon Bremen on guitar and Ariel Alexander on alto sax, backed up with two well seasoned veterans of the LA jazz scene, bassist Putter Smith and drummer Tim Pleasant. This will be really fun and well worth the $6 cover charge.
